We are a registered charity which was set up in the 1980’s as a self-help group by parents of disabled children, and we are based at Glenearn Campus, Glenearn Road, Perth. Please have a look at our short film - it was made a few years ago when we were based at Elmside house; apart from the accommodation, a lot of what we do is still the same, so it's worth a look! The name SHIP stands for Support, Help and Integration in Perthshire, for children with complex special needs; some of our children have cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and downs syndrome; many have physical as well as mental health challenges.
The point of our Charity is to improve the quality of life for children with special needs and those who care for them; we promote the health, education and well being of our young people through play and leisure activities, supporting them and where possible encouraging social integration with the community; we also endeavour to support the families and carers of our children. When children come to SHIP they are supported at all times by one of our highly committed, trained Volunteers, who ensure that the individual needs of the child are met within a safe, structured environment.
Currently SHIP runs two Youth Clubs for children with special needs each week. The groups are split by age, with one group for those age 5-12, and the other age 12 and over. Social inclusion is very much a priority, and our children are always matched up 1:1 with non - disabled Volunteers who support them during Youth Club ( SHIP) and the holiday play schemes( SPLASH).
Our popular club run during school holidays is called “SPLASH”. This runs at Easter, summer and during the October holiday, and often takes the children away on full day trips to visit educational or recreational venues such as the Glasgow Science Centre or Dynamic Earth, each of the two age groups going out twice a week.
Local man Mike Mullins, together with ANDY CHAN, climb the second highest mountain in the world to help our kids & their families - we are trully grateful to them for their efforts and their kindness...read on for the details of their exciting trip...
